The curious world of Pioneer Works community space for art, music, technology and science in Brooklyn


Pioneer Works in an Art center in Red Hook with rotating art exhibitions & workshops, artist talks and live music. Part whimsical, meandering through the garden among its fruit-bearing trees and beautiful vegetation, peaking into an artist in residence’ studio, stumbling upon it’s site-specific plant-based installations, Pioneer Works’ garden is a certified National Wildlife Habitat, providing food and shelter for over 250 species of native and introduced plants, birds and insects that contribute to the biodiversity of Red Hook.

A learning environment

It’s also a learning environnement, where reducing climate impact is at the forefront of their initiatives, offering to educate students on the unique ecosystems of this neighborhood among other topics. Learn to engage by building DIY sensors to monitor air quality for exemple, free or low cost classes provide an opportunity for participants of all ages to learn from current alumni Artists-in-Residence and intimately engage with their work, learning through visual art, music, science, and technology.

Artists’ Residencies

Pioneer Works accept 12 Visual Arts Residents, 6 Tech Residents, and 12 Music Residents each year. Offering free studio space and access to a risograph, darkroom, ceramics studio, large format printer, 3D scanner, 3D printer, thermobinder, perception neuron suit, and laser cutter. Music Residency is 1 month, and Visual Art / Tech Residency are 5 months long. Visual Arts and Tech Residents are offered a $2000 financial award and Music Residents, a $1000 financial award.

It’s free to visit Wednesday to Sunday from 12:00pm to 6:00pm. However donations of $10 are appreciated, and advanced registration is encouraged to view current exhibitions.
